How to fix a MacBook that won’t turn on
There are many reasons why your MacBook may not be powering on. If nothing happens when you press your laptop’s power button, try these simple solutions.
1. CHECK THE SCREEN’S BRIGHTNESS
To make sure the brightness is turned up, either press and hold the sun icon in the Control Strip and move your finger to the right, or press and hold the sun icon in the Control Strip and move your finger to the right. The screen will seem dark and your MacBook will appear to be shut off if you unintentionally set the slider all the way to the left.

2. PERFORM A POWER CYCLE
If your MacBook still isn’t turning on, you could run a power cycle to try to force it to restart. Try this:
- Plug your MacBook into its charger and hold down the Power button for at least 10 seconds.
- This will cut all power to the MacBook, as if you removed the battery.
- Release the Power button, leave it off for a few seconds, then press it again to start your MacBook.
3. CHECK YOUR SCREENS CONNECTIONS
If you hear your MacBook start up but don’t see anything on the screen, it’s possible that there’s a problem with the display, and you’ll need professional assistance to fix it.
If your MacBook is attached to an external display, unplug it to see if the screen on the MacBook returns to normal. If it still doesn’t work, reattach the MacBook to the external display and double-check that it’s plugged in, powered up, and switched on. Then double-check that the cable connecting your MacBook and monitor is securely secured, undamaged, and plugged into the proper input. If it doesn’t work, try connecting your MacBook to a TV or another monitor—you might be able to use it even if your original screen isn’t working.
4. CHECK YOUR POWER SOURCE
Make sure your MacBook battery is fully charged first. If it isn’t, plug it in and wait for it to turn on. Check out our article on what to do if the battery on your MacBook won’t charge.
5. TEST DIFFERENT POWER CABLES AND ADAPTERS
If your MacBook won’t turn on, you may have a faulty cord or adapter. Try using a different Apple® MacBook charger or swap out the cable for a new one.
