There are several reasons your iPhone might not be charging. Some of the most common culprits include:
- The outlet you’re using is faulty.
- You need to replace your charging cable.
- Your charging port is clogged or damaged.
- You’re overdue for a software update.
Whether you’re dealing with one of these issues or something else entirely, here are some easy troubleshooting steps to try.
1. TRY DIFFERENT CHARGERS AND OUTLETS
If your iPhone won’t charge after restarting it, connect your device to the charging cable that came with it or a cable approved by Apple® and plug it into one of the following:
- A power adapter. Plug your charging cable into an Apple-certified power adapter, then plug the adapter into the wall.
- A computer. Plug your charging cable into a USB 2.0 or 3.0 port on a computer that’s turned on and not in sleep mode. Don’t use the USB ports on your keyboard.
- A power accessory. Plug your cable into a powered USB hub, docking station, or other Apple-certified accessory.

2. MAKE SURE CABLE IS NOT LOOSE
Make sure your charging cable is not broken, unplugged, or loose. Your iPhone may not be charging when it is plugged in if the cord is torn or the connector is damaged.
You might also try using a friend’s cord to charge your phone. If the borrowed cord functions, your cable has to be replaced.
3. CHECK FOR IOS UPDATES
Checking for and installing iOS® updates will keep your iPhone charging and working properly. For more information, check out our guide on how to update your iOS.
4. CLEAN YOUR CHARGING PORT
Your phone may not be able to charge or turn on if the charging port is blocked by dirt and debris. Use our charging port cleaning guide to quickly clean out the port if it is dusty. Get assistance from a professional if it appears that the charging port is broken.
5. TRY RESTARTING YOUR IPHONE
Restart your iPhone to see if there is enough battery left, then try charging it once again. Your device is successfully charged if a lightning bolt appears inside the battery icon in the status bar or if a sizable battery icon appears on your lock screen. After 30 minutes of charging, check on it.
6. HARD RESET YOUR IPHONE
If your iPhone is unresponsive, try forcing it to restart. Here’s how:
iPhone 8 or later and iPhone SE (2nd generation):
- Press and quickly release the Volume up button.
- Press and quickly release the Volume down button.
- Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold both the Side (or Top) button and the Volume down button until the Apple logo appears.
iPhone 6s or earlier and iPhone SE (1st generation): Press and hold both the Side (or Top) button and the Home button until the Apple logo appears. Let your device charge for 30 minutes.
